Newton’s Dream

All the kids are playing games
in the orchard in the space station
tossing the fallen apples
red, green, golden,
watched by a young man
sitting sleepily under the apple tree.
Then he sits up,
straightens his wig,
doing math in his head
as the apples soar through the air
one knocks his wig crookedly half off his head
he grins wildly as the parabola
suddenly makes sense to him
understanding their gravity
delighted
as one by one the kids catch the apples,
laughing
against a background of stars.
